Chinese Box Office

China is such a large market that they can produce blockbusters that are hardly shown in the rest of the world. There are 4 Chinese movies, so far in 2018, that has performed better than the first foreign movie on the list (Avengers: Infinity War). 2 of them looks particularly interesting.

«Hello Mr. Billionaire» is based on the book «Brewster’s Millions» by George Barr McCutcheon. This book has been made into a Hollywood movie before with Richard Pryor and John Candy in the lead roles and several times before that as well.

Dying to Survive (original title: Wo bu shi yao shen) has a score of 8.2 of 10 on IMDb and the story seems interesting. «A story on how a small drug store owner became the exclusive selling agent of a cheap Indian generic drug against Chronic Granulocytic Leukemia in China.»

Beyond Existence – Short Sci-fi Film

Jack Chen – Writer, Director

Beyond Existence is a short science fiction film produced by a 21 year old film student from Vancouver, Canada.

Jack Chen is in his last year at Emily Carr University of Art and Design and the film is his grad project. He tells us he’s always been a fan of the sci-fi/cyberpunk genre and have made short films and photography in these genres in the past.

One of the main inspirations of the film comes from a story written by American science fiction author Isaac Asimov called «The last question» – which also explores the limits of humanity’s existence in relation to the vast universe.

Other inspirations include classic sci-fi films such as Blade Runner, Akira and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The idea of the film is also influenced by his intrigue in existentialism.

He often finds himself thinking about the nature of human existence and enjoy learning about existential ideas from philosophers such as Camus and Sartre.
